Mr. Sanford ( Sandy) M. Kaplan , of North Plainfield, NJ, born on September 5, 1927 in the Bronx, New York, to the late Michael and Sally ( Hirsch) Kaplan, passed away at age 90 on June 12, 2018 . Growing up in Malvern, NY, Sanford enlisted in the Aviation Cadets while in High School and after graduating, served in the Army Air Corps ( Now the Air Force) from 1944 to 1946. Upon Honorable Discharge, he attended NYU under the GI Bill, obtaining a Masters in Business Administration. He was president of Tau Delta Phi while at NYU. He worked as a pharmaceutical salesman at Schering-Plough, Inc ( Now Merck) until he retired in 1986. Sanford was married for 55 years to the late Eva Kaplan ( Mendl). He raised his three children in Fanwood, NJ, and is survived by his son, Andrew; daughters, Barbara Kaplan-Arnone (Michael) and Terry Rumas; grandchildren, Dana Rake ( Brian), Sean and Kyle Kaplan, Glenn and Jay Rumas; and great-grandchildren, Oliver and Chloe Rake. He enjoyed gardening, travel, cooking and politics. He was an active member of the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield for 54 years, as well as being on the Board of Trustees. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sanford's name to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and Planned Parenthood of New Jersey would be appreciated. Sandy will be remembered for his wry and dry humor, his compassion and generosity; his intelligence, wit and pragmatic advice. Friends and family members are invited to attend the Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield, 724 Park Ave, Plainfield, New Jersey, 07060. The Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11:00 am.
