Michael P. Omelio, 99, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the early morning on April 18 at RWJ University Hospital Somerset.
He was born on May 8, 1921 to Michael Omelio and Louise Omelio in Plainfield, NJ. He enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served his country during World War II on the USS North Carolina (BB-55) from 1942 to 1945 as a Motor Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class. He received 11 battle stars while the USS North Carolina was engaged in war with Japan in the South Pacific. While on leave, Michael married Carmella Napolitano.
After his time serving in the US Navy, Michael worked as a bricklayer for the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 34 Westfield, NJ. He was a member for over 50 years and also served as the Treasurer for Local 34.
Michael was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams - the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. He was also a member of the Italian American Social Club in North Plainfield and VFW in Plainfield.
Michael loved spending time and creating memories with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether it was holidays, backyard BBQs or trips to the Jersey Shore, being with his family was most important to him.
He is survived by his son Albert; his daughters Odelia and Carol; his eight grandchildren; and his 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Carmella; his son Michael; his brothers Tony, Vincent, Peter, John, and Albert; and his sister Carmella.
A viewing will take place at Scarpa-La Rosas Funeral Home in North Plainfield on April 21 from 4pm-8pm followed by a burial at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains on April 22. Flowers may be sent to 22 Craig Place, North Plainfield, NJ 07060.
