Louis David Scalera, age 66 of South Plainfield, New Jersey, entered eternal life surrounded by his children at J.F.K. Hospital in Edison, New Jersey on Thursday, June 30, 2022. Lou persevered through a long battle with kidney disease for many years.
He was the first of three children and is predeceased by his parents Louis and Harriet Scalera. Lou grew up in South Plainfield, and after graduating high school he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and lived overseas for five years while in the military. He particularly enjoyed his time spent in England. Lou was honorably discharged from the USAF in 1981 and then returned home to the United States. He continued his career in aviation and worked as a flight technician for F.L. Aviation in Morristown for many years. He went on to raise and support his family in Manville, New Jersey.
Lou had many hobbies and interests, and was a history and politics guru. He was an avid reader and a regular at the town library. He was a guitar player and collector as well as a harmonica player. He loved playing and listening to the blues. Lou enjoyed building model cars, airplanes, and tanks, drawing, and had an appreciation for all kinds of art. He was a die hard fan of Formula I racing and loved Ferraris. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. Before he got sick, he enjoyed spending time being active in the great outdoors, especially riding his bike and fishing and hiking with his children. He instilled a love and appreciation of nature within his children. He was also a lover of all animals.
Louie is survived by his two beloved daughters, Jessica Stover (Scalera) and her husband Matthew of Milford, N.J, his daughter Alyssa Scalera of South Plainfield, N.J. and his granddaughter Mia Stover (Jessica and Matthew). He is also survived by his brother Mark Scalera (Vicki) and sister Michele Hall (Wayne) as well as his cherished pet cat, “Moo.”
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Scarpa - Las Rosas Funeral Home, 22 Craig Place North Plainfield, N.J. 07060. Burial will take place on Friday July 8th 2pm at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Military Cemetery in North Hanover, N.J.
