In Memoriam: My Mom, Eudosia Niko

Born and raised in Greece, my mom Eudosia Niko was from the village of Kerasohori. During her time there, she endured much hardship and after World War II traveled to Argentina where she later met and married my father. In Argentina my parents had two children, my brother John and myself before moving to the United States. Life in the U.S. was not easy either. Both of my parents worked very hard, at times working 2 jobs to make ends meet. Early in life, Eudosia lost her husband to cancer and raised my brother and me on her own. Even through her struggles my mother found enjoyment in cooking for her family and friends, everyone knew you could not go to Yia Yia’s house and not have something to eat!  My mom also loved her home and enjoyed spending time in her garden. She lived a full life, was a strong and generous woman and was blessed with seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Her grandchildren were her world. She often told me that not many people are lucky enough to see so many grandchildren. She would always say to them, “Yia Yia Megali Loves You” whenever she would see them or talk to them on the phone.

I will truly miss my mom. Her house on 9 New Walnut will not be the same without her. Around every corner is another memory of her and the things she loved most in life. Her flowers now sit on the porch waiting to picked and watered, and her refrigerator full for one more meal to be cooked, but she has moved on to a better place. A place where she feels no pain, a place where she is at ease and place where she is among family who has passed before her. Your memories will live on in the good times we spent together, and the many photos and recipes you left behind – we will think of you always mom when we cook them.

Mom, one day we will meet again but until then, please watch over us and keep us safe.  May God rest your soul and grant you peace in this after life. And in your last words before you passed, your favorite words, “I Love You” too, mom, now and forever your loving daughter.
